Congratulations! You have started your path as an entrepreneur, and you are on your way to turn your ideas and dreams into reality – Not like Bob who still believes his startup about shoe umbrellas will (eventually) become successful.

At DistantJob, we firmly believe that to create a successful startup business, you need the best team by your side. But also, there is another key ingredient to persevere in any startup, whether it is tech-related or in any other area: Inspiration.

We have selected 6 Ted Talks to help you get inspired and strengthen your path towards entrepreneurship:

The Single Biggest Reason Why Startups Succeed – Bill Gross

It’s not news that many businesses fail during the first 5 years. But why? Why do some businesses fail, and others don’t?

Bill Gross is able to answer this question. He is the founder of Idealab and is genuinely passionate about startups.

His organization has helped fund more than 100 companies. However, not all of them succeeded. In his quest to finding out why so many startups failed, he looked into 5 main factors:

  • Idea
  • Team
  • Business model
  • Funding
  • Timing

In this Ted Talk, he reveals which of these factors is the secret key for success in startups (We are not spoiling which one – it’s worth watching)

How Great Leaders Inspire Action – Simon Sinek

This is one of the most viewed Ted Talks of all time and for a good reason. Simon Sinek, writer, and motivational speaker, shares his powerful discovery on how great leaders inspire.

He studied how great leaders like Martin Luther King and big brands like Apple behave by understanding how our brain works. And developing what he calls “The golden circle” – A theory that reveals what great leaders do differently that inspire people to act.

This talk will inspire you to remember why you are doing what you are doing instead of knowing what you do.

Are you a Giver or a Taker? – Adam Grant

Adam Grant, Institutional Psychologist, shares a different insight on how success depends on contribution and how to have a great company you need the right people by your side. If you are wondering: How to know the good from the bad? Which kind of employees is better for my startup? This Ted Talk is for you.

He separates two kinds of workers: Takers & Givers.  Being able to identify one another might be a game-changer for your company.  Which should you hire? The giver? The taker? Find out!

Why the Best Hire Might Not Have the Best Resume – Regina Hartley

Regina Hartley is the Vice President of Global Talent Management at UPS. She knows how to identify talent, and it is not in a CV.

You might think that some of the best candidates have outstanding CVs. Come from elite education, ivy league colleges, and seem to have a life destined to succeed. However, in this Ted Talk Regina Hartley proves that the best talent is usually the people that have fought their way to success or as she calls this kind of people: Scrappers.

Her advice for those searching for talent:

[bctt tweet=””Choose the underestimated contender, whose secret weapons are passion and purpose. Hire the Scrapper.”” username=”DistantJob”]

Dare to Disagree – Margaret Heffernan

Margaret Heffernan is the former CEO of five businesses, writer and keynote speaker. She has studied the way business works and how leaders can be more effective.

On this powerful Ted Talk, she demonstrates with examples of how disagreement is positive and even fundamental for progression in businesses. Different points of view and “conflict” allow people to come up with great solutions and ideas. The best teams are not made of people who think the same and always praise each other. But it’s quite the opposite.

[bctt tweet=””It’s a fantastic model of collaboration — thinking partners who aren’t echo chambers. I wonder how many of us have, or dare to have, such collaborators.”” username=”DistantJob”]

How to Make Stress Your Friend – Kelly McGonigal

Starting businesses, even though it is exciting, it’s also stressful.

Stress is often seen as the enemy of productivity and overall health. In this fun Ted Talk Kelly McGonigal, a health Stanford psychologist, confesses that she was used to thinking of stress as the worst enemy. However, she realized with a study, that stress could cause harmful effects depending on how you perceive.

It’s not about avoiding stress – it is about changing your mind about the importance that can make you healthier.

[bctt tweet=””How you think and how you act can transform your experience of stress. When you choose to view your stress response as helpful, you create the biology of courage.”” username=”DistantJob”]

When you are starting a business, it is every day that you manage a lot of things at once. Stress is inevitable, but what you can control is how you react. Check out this Ted Talk to see why this is important.
