    The three most common mistakes when hiring a CI/CD engineer

    1. Hiring someone who has used pipelines, not designed them

    Most developers have triggered a GitHub Actions workflow. That does not make them a CI/CD engineer. Ask every candidate to describe a pipeline they built from scratch, what the SDLC requirements were, and how they handled secrets management. If they cannot answer that specifically, they are a developer who has seen CI/CD, not an engineer who owns it.

     

    CI/CD engineering overlaps with DevOps but is a distinct specialisation. A DevOps engineer who has spent five years on infrastructure, Terraform, and Kubernetes may have limited pipeline automation experience. A CI/CD engineer who has spent five years on Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and SDLC controls may have limited Kubernetes depth. Decide which problem you are actually solving before you write the job description.

     

    3. Skipping the SDLC controls question

     

    Regulated industries and enterprise clients often need their CI/CD pipelines to satisfy specific audit and compliance requirements. If you need SOC 2, ISO 27001, or internal SDLC policy compliance built into your pipelines, test for this directly. Ask candidates to explain how they have implemented a specific control in a previous pipeline. Generic answers about “security awareness” are not sufficient.
