    1) Sourcing and triage

AI candidates triaged on specific signals: stated production AI experience (not just tutorial completions), public AI work (GitHub, blog posts, library contributions), exposure to specific frameworks matching your stack, and time-zone fit.

     

    2) Recruiter screening: communication and remote readiness

    A recruiter assesses spoken and written English, async communication discipline, motivation, and stability. AI engineering specifically requires strong written communication because so much of the work happens in design docs and architectural reviews.

     

    3) Technical depth interview

    4) Live coding session: code review on a real AI codebase

    We use code review rather than algorithm puzzles. The candidate reviews a deliberately flawed AI codebase containing common production problems: imprecise prompts that produce inconsistent output, RAG implementations with chunking strategies that don’t match the document type, missing evaluation infrastructure, no cost monitoring, no fallback patterns when the upstream LLM API fails.

     

    5) References and risk checks

    We speak with two prior managers or technical leads. We specifically ask about failure modes the engineer has handled,  production incidents, cost overruns, retrieval quality degradation, hallucination incidents in regulated contexts. References who can give specific stories about how the engineer responded to AI-specific failures are gold; vague positive references are a yellow flag.

     

    6) Placement readiness

    Final alignment with the candidate on start date, hardware/security constraints (relevant for AI work where access to production data may be restricted), preferred collaboration tools, and onboarding logistics.
